Chris Williamson was the Labour MP for Derby North until the last election and is a former leader of Derby City Council where he was a councillor for 20 years before being elected to parliament.

He has been an active animal welfare campaigner for 40 years and is a former chair of the Hunt Saboteurs Association.  He has been a trustee of the League Against Cruel Sports since 1979 and was the chair of the League from 1984 – 1994.

He was also involved in the campaign to put animals into politics in 1979 and helped to spearhead the campaign that led to Hunting Act in 2004.
